Top Five: Christmas Party Outfits

I love the festive season. It’s such a great time of year to catching up with friends, celebrate and of course dressing up and looking cute. But my goodness, there are So. Many. Events. Has anyone else noticed that the list of Christmas parties in their diary has quadrupled?! This year I have three work parties alone plus all the dinners, drinks and parties with friends. And of course, I’m bored of my entire wardrobe which means I must buy a new one. There’s nothing like the stress of outfit planning to make you despair at all of your past sartorial choices!

The likes of Topshop and ASOS have long been my failsafe go to shops, 99% of the time I will find exactly what I’m after and probably a lot more! But with a gauntlet of events to navigate without making the ultimate party faux pas and wearing the same outfit as someone else, the obvious choices must be avoided. I’ve rounded up my favourite looks from more under-the-radar shops to help you look your best during the party season:

  1. Whistles Rossi Strappy dress– Was £195, now £155 Invest in this dress and it will be the hardest working piece in your wardrobe come party season. The demure length is great for work, just slip a blazer over to cover up your shoulders and the cut outs. After work, just refresh your make up, tousle your hair and slip off the jacket and you’re good to go.
  2. The Finery Rosetta jumpsuit - £75I *love* The Finery. It’s a bit of a fashion industry fave, whenever I’m at an event and bump into someone looking impeccable, they’re always wearing The Finery. This jumpsuit is utter perfection, velvet and exposed shoulders tick two major trend boxes and the midnight blue shade looks so decadent.
  3. Next lace fringed dress - £45 Black is a great colour, always chic and understated. But it’s such a default shade, particularly during the party season. This deep red dress will really make a statement in a sea of black. The shape is simple and flattering so you can accessorise it up or down.
  4. Dorothy Perkins velvet slip dress– Was £45, now £33.75 I have to admit, I haven’t shopped in Dorothy Perkins for years. More fool me, because this dress is stunning. Like The Finery jumpsuit, it ticks two trend boxes – velvet and the 90s. It’s super chic but the lace cut outs give is a flirty, playful edge.
  5. Next metallic playsuit - £55 Channel serious mermaid vibes with this beautiful little metallic jumpsuit. I’m a sucker for iridescent metallic pieces so I’m totally obsessed with this piece. I’d keep it simple and style it with a pair of simple courts and a clutch.

Gift Guide: The Gym Bunny

There are two types of people: those who solve to get fit every New Year and those who see it as a lifestyle. Here are my top Christmas gifts for the gym bunnies in your life:

  1. Starwood Sports foam roller - £13.99
They might not be the sexiest present but foam rollers are an absolute essential piece of kit who is serious about fitness. From weights or running through to yoga, they’re invaluable for pre-workout to help prevent injuries and post-workout to sooth aching muscles.
  2. Lululemon yoga bag - £52
I think the best way to approach gift-buying is to choose something nice that the person probably wouldn’t buy for themselves, a real treat. This yoga bag is a little pricey and indulgent but it would be so handy for a yogi to protect their mat on the journey to and from class.
  3. Maniere De Voir mesh panel leggings -£22.99
There is absolutely no reason for workout leggings to be dull. I love this beige pair with mesh detailing, which are sure to stand out in a sea of black at the gym or yoga studio.
  4. Charli Cohen Lacuna bra - £95
Charli Cohen is one of my favourite sportswear designers and an absolutely lovely person. She really marries functional and technical sportswear with fashion and this sports bra epitomises her approach, it’s almost too cool for the gym but it’s breathable, moisture-wicking and offers medium support.
  5. Varley Ashland iceberg hoodie - £90
The details of this sleeveless hoodie, from the back cut out to the drop armholes, make it the ideal ashleisure piece to take you from the smoothie bar to the gym.

Gift Guide: Last Minute Gifts!

OMG it’s Christmas this week! No matter how well organised I think I am or how many tabs my Christmas spreadsheet has, I always seem to get caught off guard and usually in the week leading up to Christmas. Side note: Please tell me I’m not the only person who makes a spreadsheet to keep track of cards, gifts, visits and parties?! While I love buying gifts at Christmas, they’re also my downfall. My gifts tend to be well thought out, I umm and ahh over them for a couple of weeks (hence the spreadsheet!) and eventually settle on a gift which comes with an explanation or some meaning. That’s all well and good…if you don’t forget someone! If you’re also a forgetful one, bookmark this post as you’ll need it! I’ve rounded up my five failsafe gift ideas which pretty much everyone would be stoked to receive.

  1. Christian Louboutin Miss Loubi lip colour - £65 Every woman loves Christian Louboutin and there’s nothing more iconic than Louboutin red. Perhaps the most luxe lip colour in the world, this special Miss Loubi is presented in a metal bullet case with gold ribbon and beautifully boxed. A real treat for someone special.
  2. Pretty Iconic by Sali Hughes - £26 Sali Hughes is one of the world’s leading beauty influencers and her highly anticipated book is an essential for anyone into beauty. Full to the brim with knowledge about beauty products, routines and influential people like Charlotte Tilbury, this book is a total beauty bible.
  3. Beats by Dre Pill+ portable speaker - £189.99 It’s no secret that my Beats by Dre headphones are an essential part of my life. As a music lover, there’s simply no better way to hear music. The Pill+ brings the technology of the headphones to a Bluetooth speaker with 12-hour battery life, perfect for any music lover.
  4. Tom Dixon candle gift set - £80 I’m obsessed with anything Tom Dixon, from his home accessories to his restaurants. His clean, industrial aesthetic translates so well. I have his diffuser at home so I can vouch for his home fragrances. This set of three candles is generic enough to appeal to the masses but unique enough to be a treasured gift.
  5. Charlotte Tilbury mini brush set - £45 Make up can be tricky to buy but brushes are a failsafe gift choice. I tend to put off investing in new brushes til I really need them, so I’m always grateful for my aunts who tend to buy me brush sets. This set contains powder, blender, smudger and precision brushes in a gorgeous art-deco style case.

Merry Christmas x

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…just a few bloggers hastily typing up their final pre-Christmas posts! This creeps up on me every single year. Due to my day-job, I’m working on Christmas from May/June onwards so by the time December comes around, Christmas feels like a totally normal part of everyday life until, oops, the day itself is nearly here.

While I love planning gifts for my nearest and dearest with precision, I don't really like receiving gifts myself. I feel so lucky that I have so much already. For me, this is a time to give thanks be grateful rather than crave material things. I think this is particularly important this year, which has been pretty rough for everyone. It’s so easy to focus on your hardships rather than count your blessings. Right now, I’m thankful to still be here and to live a fairly privileged life, with a roof over my head and food n my belly. I feel rich because I’m surrounded by abundant love and the most incredibly supportive friends. Anything other than that is just extra. It’s nice to have nice things but if you don’t stop to appreciate how much you already have, what’s the point?

I used to love writing Christmas cards each year and posting them off to friends – it’s just so nice to receive proper post these days isn’t it? But this year, I’ve decided to put the money I would have spent on cards towards something much more meaningful. The crisis in Syria absolutely breaks my heart and I can’t quite comprehend that we live in a world which isn’t acting fast enough to stop the endless suffering in Aleppo and beyond. I decided to do something rather than being horrified at the news so I put the money I would have spent on cards and postage towards a donation to help those in need. I donated to Doctors Without Borders, you can read more about their work in Syria here.

I hope you all have a wonderful day whether you celebrate Christmas or not. I hope you have a restful, happy few days of rest with your loved ones and take the time to appreciate the people that make a difference to your life.

Love,
Reena

Top Tips for Self-Care in the New Year

$

2016 has been a tumultuous year on every scale, from the humanitarian crisis in Syria and the catastrophic state of international politics through to personal struggles and hardships. It’s been a tough slog for everyone over the past 365 days. Without going into too much detail, I’ve experienced a lot of lows but also some very happy highs this year. Through my journey, I have realised the importance of self-care. Self-care is about identifying and prioritising your own needs and taking steps to meet them. It’s so easy to be swept away by life – work, family, friends, partner, hobbies, pets, fitness – and constantly giving until you have nothing left to give. Self-care seeks to redress the balance, making sure you take the time to nurture and nourish yourself; treating yourself as kindly as you treat others.

Like most women, I spend a significant amount of time focusing on others rather than focusing on myself. It’s all too easy to forget to put yourself first from time to time, especially when you have a to do list as long as your arm. This time last year, I had a horrible chest infection which just about cleared up for New Year’s Eve but it returned with a vengeance a few days later. Despite having a chest infection, I tried to carry on as usual with work, blogging and seeing friends and became worn out, stressed and more run down on top of having a pretty awful infection…which then developed into walking pneumonia. All because I neglected to care for myself, cut down on my obligations and take a couple of days to actually be sick.

While walking pneumonia isn’t as aggressive as pneumonia and doesn’t require being hospitalised, it’s pretty awful. I had no choice but to take a couple of days sick and cut down on blogging and other obligations. I spent a few days bedridden and it’s safe to say I learned my lesson! Neglecting your own needs just means you give until you’re running on empty Lack of self-care can manifest itself in the form of illnesses as well as negative thought processes, thinking errors, anxiety, low self-esteem and stress among other things, so it’s important to ensure you’re taking time to refuel.

For me, the key is practising self-care every day. Little and often works for me, whether that means stepping away from my computer to take a 10 minute walk, having a bath at the end of the day or making time in my day for a nap at the weekend. A small amount of self-care every day adds up. I also like to plan trips away to totally disconnect with everyday life and switch off. Last January, I had what felt like a very indulgent self-care trip – I spent a weekend at a yoga and Ayurveda retreat in the Catalan Pyrenees. Daily meditation, pranayama breathing and yoga felt almost decadent and it really felt like I had started the year in the best way by re-centring myself

I’m not really one for New Year’s Resolutions, but as we approach the New Year, I’ve been thinking about how I can start this year as positively as last year.

1. Define your circle
Having a strong, positive support network is so key - people you can count on when the chips are down, not just the good times. I have gotten rid of a couple of fair-weather friends this year, which has created more space for people who have my best intentions at heart and I trust completely. I speak to my core circle everyday, about big issues and small niggles. Sharing is caring, especially when it comes to what’s on your mind.

2. Have a spring clean
Breaking: spring cleans aren’t just for spring. Over the last week, I’ve been slowly having a spring clean, just a corner or a draw here and there in between Christmas parties and events and it’s already making a huge difference to my mentality. My bedroom is my sanctuary and it feels like it’s had a breath of fresh air, just by having a little reorganise and throwing a few things out. It feels so good to enter 2017 with order and serenity in my home.

3. Detox, digitally
In the same vein has having a physical spring clean, I’ve also had a digital spring clean. I don’t mean switching off from social media; please…I’m a blogger! I just mean tidying up your digital life. Both my blog and personal email are out of control, mainly because I’m signed up to dozens of newsletters. Instead of my usual tactic of bulk deleting emails, I’ve been opening every email and unsubscribing from the companies which don’t interest me. Now, when I open my emails in the morning, my inbox is a lot tidier and much more relevant. I’ve also done this with my social channels, unfollowing accounts which no longer resonate with me. Both of these steps have helped so much with my productivity.

4. Get active
Exercise is super important for self-care. In the words of Elle Woods “Exercise gives you endorphins and endorphins make you happy”. I actually quit the gym this month, as I haven’t been for 6+ months, but I’ve started doing yoga every morning again and I do workouts with resistance bands for more targeted sculpting. Whether you’re a runner, like lifting or do Krav Maga, make sure you get active a couple of times a week. I have a ton of exercises you can do at home saved on my Pinterest board if you need any inspiration.

5. Learn something new
Learning a new skill is great for your self-esteem and committing to classes forces you to take time for yourself on a regular basis. I live in London and I’m fortunate enough to be able to pick anything. This year, I want to do a makeup course, learn about digital photography and learn French. There are also some great online resources for distance learning too, try Coursera and NCC Home Learning. The Nutrition NVQ I want to do is through NCC Home Learning, it consists of 4 units looking at the principles of healthy eating, nutritional needs and planning a healthy diet so it's super comprehensive but also very handy that I’m able to learn so much from the comfort of my own home.

Happy New Year!

It’s been a long old slog but we are finally here, it’s New Year’s Eve and time to say goodbye to 2016. I think we can all agree that this year has been pretty horrible but while many people are keen to write off the whole year as a rotten one, I think it’s important to look for the positives. It’s not black and white, there is no such thing as a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ year. Your year will be as good or bad as you choose to remember it.

Over the Christmas break, I’ve naturally been reflecting on 2016. As we approach 2017, I wanted to mull over the ups, the downs and everything that has happened. There’s universal agreement that 2016 has had some very low lows, I think it’s important to consolidate the low points in order to learn from them and move forward in a positive way - everything is a learning experience. And of course it’s equally important to focus on the highs, celebrate the good times and give thanks for all of the good things in your life. Everything that happens is either a blessing or a lesson.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt this year is the importance of self-care – which I touched on in my post for self-care tips in the New Year. I learned the hard way that it’s not selfish to put yourself first, it’s actually essential. How can you give to others if you’re running on empty – which is what I was doing for months til I reached breaking point. I had no choice but to stop and objectively weigh up everything in my life to see whether it was helping me or hindering me.

It was liberating but also quite frightening spending time assessing whether situations or people were adding to my life or draining me. If it was the latter, it had to go. Sometimes in life you end up in circumstances or with people who just exhaust you rather than energise and help you. There’s a poet I adore called Warsan Shire, she sums this up so eloquently: “But sometimes your light attracts moths and your warmth attracts parasites. Protect your space and energy”.

I spent much of the year shedding – people, places, situations, homes, clothes, possessions. Things that no longer serve me, inspire me or help me to grow. But instead of losing anything of value in my life, I created room for more. I realised that I didn’t need to hold onto any of it, I was discarding dead weight and making room for new shoots to grow. The first half of the year was pretty tough, but I’d do it all again because I’ve come out of 2016 much stronger and happier than ever with great people in my life and a bright path in front of me. The year wasn’t all bad, I learned to let go and curate a life I love. A grateful heart is a happy heart.

I hope you have all had time to reflect on the year and consolidate the ups and downs. We’re all a lot more fortunate than we realise and hopefully when you look back on 2016, you’ll have happy memories and lessons that you’ve taken away. I hope your 2017 is full of happiness and love and that you see in the new year with a smile.

Thank you so much for your continued support of Fashion Daydreams and my writing, it means so much to me that you read my blog. I have so many exciting projects and more personal posts in the pipeline so keep your eyes peeled!

Top Five: Selfridges Sale Steals

$

Does anyone else find that they develop a slightly obsession to sale shopping at this time of the year? I get a weird pleasure out of finding beautiful pieces at ridiculously reasonable prices. Selfridges is one of my favourite places to go sale shopping, in the past I’ve managed to snap up a bright pink backless mohair dress by Sibling for £40, the original retail price was over £400! Although it’s bright pink, it was a real investment purchase due to the cut and the luxe mohair and I still wear it 4 years. That’s the mark of a true sale steal; a timeless piece you’ll keep in your wardrobe for years to come.

The best bargains are always found in store, but it’s so much more convenient to shop online so I’ve rounded up my favourite investment buys from Selfridges just for you:

  1. Reiss Xeni velvet dress– was £150, now £75
While velvet was a huge trend for AW16, I think it’s a pretty staple fabric so you’ll be able to wear it for years to come. This dress has a gorgeous midnight blue hue – my favourite colour – and a very simple, flattering cut. The simple lines of the dress are accentuated with the asymmetric neckline, a tiny detail which has a big impact on how this dress looks.
  2. Jimmy Choo Daphne platforms– was £620, now £375
I’ve got a confession, I love Jimmy Choo shoes. I ‘accidentally’ bought myself two pairs while I was supposed to be Christmas shopping last month, whoops! I love these platforms, which have a sturdy block heel, secure ankle strap and intricate whipstitch detailing. A stunning, classic shoe.
  3. MAC Nutcracker sweet matte lipstick– was £17, now £11.50
This may be a controversial statement but I think MAC’s limited edition collections have the best shades. I have a roster of staple lipsticks (Twig, Russian Red and Diva, since you asked), but the limited collections are SO covetable and usually sell out super quickly. I love the classic ‘So good for you’ red from the Nutcracker Sweet collection.
  4. Valentino ruffle neck jumper– was £1,000, now £295
This jumper is an absolute steal! And a gorgeous piece to add to your wardrobe. A pretty, timeless, neutral shade which is spiced up with a subtle ruffle, cable motif and metallic thread to keep it cute, this jumper would look great layered over a dress or simply worn with jeans and court shoes.
  5. MAC Nutcracker Sweet essential brush kit – was £45, now £31.50
From the same collection as the gorgeous ‘So good for you’ lipstick above, I also spied this pretty brush kit on sale. It includes the face blender brush, blending brush and small angle brush in a bold pouch. May your contour be perfectly blended throughout 2017!

My Blogger New Year's Resolutions

$

0

I have to hold my hands up; I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. The concept of declaring ‘new year, new me’ on a set date and trying to overhaul your entire life in one go on a day dictated by a calendar just seems a little silly.  As far as I’m concerned, every day is a good day to make a positive change. In the last year I have adopted some great new habits without the aid of a specific calendar date. Nothing major, just little things like having a green smoothie for breakfast everyday, meditating as much as possible and never using make up remover wipes. Just small, easy tweaks slowly introduced across the year to make me healthier and happier.

That being said, there is something about having a fresh start. A new year feels like a fresh page. It’s inevitable to reflect on the passing of a year and think about what went well and what you can learn from, as I did in my previous post on New Year’s Eve. As well as learning about self-care and the art of letting go, I also rediscovered my love of blogging. I’ve been candid about my struggle with blogging as it’s evolved over the years and how disingenuous it’s become. From outlandish demands and inflated figures to navigating the politics of blogger cliques, the industry has changed a lot in the eight years since I set up Fashion Daydreams.

This year, I stripped away any niggles and doubts, instead choosing to start writing again for me, after all that’s how I started. Rather than being a slave to PRs and an overflowing inbox, I started writing about things I love and that resonate with me. Instead of going to 5 events a night and laughing about being on the champagne and canape diet, I only went to ones which piqued my interest. And more crucially, instead of pressuring myself to write a new post every day, I aimed to write twice a week. Blogging now feels brand new and I’m creating content I’m proud of and I’m so motivated to keep improving and getting better. Not for anyone or due to fierce competition, for myself.

And although I’m not a fan of resolutions, I couldn’t help but think of a few resolutions or goals I want to achieve with my blog. I’m proud of what I achieved in 2016 and can’t wait to achieve more. I wanted to share some of my blogging resolutions and I’ve asked some of the bloggers that inspire me what they want to achieve in 2017, I can’t resist getting a sneak peek into what my faves have in store for this year. Here are our blogger’s new year’s resolutions:

Play to your strengths
One of the lessons I’ve learnt this year is to focus on my strengths. Blogging has become such a diverse industry, with engaged communities across every sector from music and fitness to food and of course fashion. I love the idea of vlogging about beauty, particularly as a women of colour but it’s just not my forte. I get super nervous talking in public and don’t feel qualified to give beauty or make up advice; I can’t do a smoky eye to save my life! I do, however, know fashion. I’ve worked in the industry for 8 years and currently have a great job working with luxury brands so this really is my strength and what I should focus on. That’s not to say beauty, travel and lifestyle won’t sneak onto Fashion Daydreams though..!

More outfit posts
This is something I have wanted to do for a long, long time. Fashion Daydreams started life as a creative outlet for my outfits – back when it was acceptable to post pictures taken in your bedroom with your head cut off. Thankfully things have moved on a lot since then! The best part of being a blogger is being able to share your personal view and taste and this is something I’d love to do more of. I’ve been scoping out photographers for the last couple of months, so watch this space!

More personal posts
This is such a great resolution, the reason bloggers are thriving is because we have a unique voice and perspective. This is something that my favourite menswear blogger, Jaime of Boy Meets Fashion, wants to share more this year, stating “My new year's resolution is to start producing some personal posts.  It's something I have been wanting to do for quite some time because I love connecting with people to discuss experiences, and have always been fascinated by the human psychology. There is perhaps nothing more human than to write about this beautiful existence we call life! “

Travel moreSharing travel adventures goes hand-in-hand with more personal posts. I travel fairly frequently and love sharing my journey and travel tips with everyone. Travel, especially to developing countries is a real passion of mine and I get so much engagement on the blog and social when I’m travelling. This is something Kirsty from the fab Fashion for Lunch blog wants to do more of this year, “it would be great to travel a little more in 2017, in 2016 I was at home a lot as I was busy renovating my house, so I'm hoping to get out a little more this year! My readers always love my travel posts as I tend to find the colourful corners of my locations and the slightly more off-the-beaten track shops and cafes.”

Stop comparing yourself to others
I think it’s human nature to compare yourself to others, especially in blogging. It can be really distracting and stop you from focusing on your own unique voice and perspective. Kirsty also wants to stop comparing herself to others this year, “I know it's terrible, but I am always comparing myself to others and feeling not good enough as a result! Which is just silly as we all have different strengths and weaknesses, but I'm quite hard on myself and it's very easy to not feel good enough! So that's something I'm really going to be working on!”

Don’t be afraid to create
For many bloggers, blogging started as a creative outlet. I think it’s important to remember this and keep pushing the creative envelope. This is something that the brilliant Ashanti from Adorn Girl knows all too well, “2017 is really about mixing it up creatively. My 2017 resolution is to blog less. I ideally want to take on more photography commissions, and the blog will be used as the space to experiment and showcase my product photography.”

And there you have it. There it is in black and white, the things I would like to focus on for the next year. I’d love to hear what your resolutions are for 2017 in the comments!

Golden Globes Best Dressed 2017

$

I love the Golden Globes. Kicking off awards season as we approach mid-January, aka the time we need beauty and sparkles the most. Overall, I was fairly underwhelmed by the red carpet looks this season. While the likes of Emma Stone and Sienna Miller did look great, I feel like many played it safe on the red carpet and didn’t really want to wow. There were, of course, some breath-taking looks too. Here are my favourite looks from last night’s glittering awards.

Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
For me, Priyanka won the red carpet. Hands down. Best dressed by a mile. I may be slightly biased as I love seeing Indian actresses slaying in Hollywood…representation is important. But her incredible Ralph Lauren gown is a stunner, featuring 1,600 hours of hand embroidery with gold sequins and glass beads. I love that it was styled with a simple blowdry and dark berry lip.

Blake Lively in Versace
We all know that Blake can wear the hell out of a dress. She’s always a welcome sight on the red carpet as she always brings her A-game, this stunning Versace dress is exhibit A. The black velvet and ornate gold detailing with the plunging neckline make the think of old Hollywood glamour. Perfectly styled with minimal make-up and her hair swept off her face, one of my favourite looks.

Natalie Portman in Prada
Natalie is also someone who always brings their A-game to the red carpet – even when heavily pregnant! Swathed in canary yellow in a beautiful ‘60s gown, she is the epitome of elegance and is totally rocking the pregnancy glow.

Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra
Also opting for yellow, Emily stunned on the red carpet. I feel her style is getting slightly edgier and I’m here for it. This dress was the perfect choice for the bombshell, with dramatic slits and super plunging neckline. I’m also a big fan of the deconstructed faux bob.

Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton
The overwhelming trend at the Globes was sugary pink or pretty sherbet. Ruth’s futuristic metallic shimmer of a dress was the perfect antidote to the overly sweet red carpet dresses. I love that she stayed true to her aesthetic and picked a simple look which made a big impact.

Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad Couture
Speaking of sweet dresses, Lily’s dreamy dusky pink tulle gown could easily have looked too saccharine but it was well accessorised with a sweeping updo and a slightly gothic matte berry lip giving it a much needed edge. Definitely one of the best looks of the night.

Brie Larson in Rodarte
Red on the red carpet is always tricky to pull off but Brie looks incredible in this Rodarte gown. The dress is simple but really accentuated her tiny waist and décolletage with criss-cross detailing and a sprinkling of stones. The burgundy lip and sleek waves finish this look off perfectly.

Top Five: January Party Dresses

I know, I know, why am I talking about party dresses? It’s January and everyone is broke/detoxing/giving up alcohol. Payday seems to be forever away and all everyone wants to do is hibernate until February. Well, everyone apart from January babies. It was my birthday last week and I speak from experience when I say that January is the most depressing month to be born, for the above reasons. No one is ever in the mood to celebrate, do you turn a year older but without the sparkles and glitter. What a raw deal!

When I turned 30, I changed my celebrations to a few months later to celebrate my half birthday and it was a revelation. Everyone was happy, tanned, the weather was good and everyone was happy. This year though, I’m going to champion January celebrations and making sure the year gets off to a good start – whether there’s a birthday to celebrate or not. Everyone needs a good excuse to get dressed up in a gorgeous cocktail dresses  to start the year off right. Here are my top five party dresses under £35.
  1. Black embroidered shirt dress - £25
A classic shirt dress is the perfect piece to take you from the office to dinner in January, it’s not too dressed up but easy to accessorise up. I love the embroidered detail on the back. I’d wear this with opaques, chic court shoes, a choker and a bold cherry lip, this season’s biggest makeup trend.
  2. Navy bodycon mini dress - £25
Navy is one of my favourite colours, especially in the evening. Black is timeless but everyone wears black, I also find navy more flattering. This figure hugging dress will accentuate your figure and I love the delicate strap detailing.
  3. Velvet bodycon dress - £25
Velvet was one of my favourite trends for AW16, it just feels so sumptuous and luxe. That’s why I couldn’t resist adding this little velvet number to my edit. The champagne colour would look equally good with opaques or bare legs when the weather starts to warm up in spring.
  4. Off the shoulder denim embroidered dress - £30
Off the shoulder is a key trend for SS17, seen across the catwalks from New York to Paris. This dress would look great with some over the knee boots for a statement look or red courts, playing up the red embroidery.
  5. Black dress with lattice crochet detail - £35
I couldn’t do a dress edit without at least one LBD. As much as I love navy, you can’t go wrong with a classic LBD. I love the crochet detailing on this dress, I’d style it with 1920s style Hollywood waves for a bombshell look.

London Fashion Week Men AW17

This season saw the menswear shows undertake a little revamp. ‘London Collections: Men’ is long gone, say hello to London Fashion Week Men. Here are my favourite shows for the autumn/winter 2017 season:

Liam Hodges

Fashion Week Men started strong on its first day. Liam Hodges’ collection was politically charged and extremely relevant to the times. Inspired by one line performance poet Hector Aponysis – “Looking for a vocation in the decline of civilisation” – as well as the likes of A Clockwork Orange and Mad Max, Hodges’ collection, entitled ‘Dystopia Lives’, was dark and deconstructed with a slight upbeat feel, indicating that “darkness can be beat”. The collection featured his signature earthy colour palette with flashes of neon as well as mismatched patchwork, smudged camouflage, distorted prints and embroidered outerwear. Slogans including “Ideology is a myth” made a strong statement in this brilliant AW debut collection.

YMC

References for YMC’s AW17 collection include the Bauhaus movement and Berlin in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The resulting collection was functional and directional with clean lines but at the same time, each piece was extremely wearable. With a muted palette of neutrals pepped up with a handful of geometric prints, the collection highlights included sheepskin flight jackets, a speckled wool coat and fishtail parkas. Each piece instantly covetable but crucially, it would fit in seamlessly into any wardrobe. I’m coveting all of the womenswear pieces shown in the presentation too!

Oliver Spencer

Oliver Spencer’s AW17 collection is timeless in more ways than one. Hats off to whoever put together a fabulous cast of models from all age brackets, bucking the norm of brands showcasing their goods on models who are likely to alienate their core customer. The casting was fitting for a collection which was beautifully timeless and instantly covetable. Featuring layers upon layers and cosy fur-collared overcoats and a rainbow of roll necks, the collection also had flashes of velvet and tartan and stripes.

Cottweiler

Nature called and Cottweiler’s design duo Ben Cottrell and Matthew Dainty answered. Their AW17 collection is heavily inspired by nature and camping. Models clad in colour-blocked waterproof sportswear stomped down the runway with bags, iphone chargers and sleeping bags strewn across their person. Black and green dominated with a pepper of indigo and lilac. Subtle swan motifs scattered throughout the collection added a softer edge to a great collection which packed a 90s punch.

Maharishi

Maharishi and military go together like peanut butter and jelly. I look forward to their new twist on the perennial trend every season. Autumn/Winter 2017 sees the brand travel across to Africa for inspiration. The collection, entitled ‘Tour D’Afrique’, took inspiration from the Chinese and US occupation in different parts of Africa, resulting in an impactful collection with Eastern, Western and African influences. The colour palette, of course, featured khakis and camo as well as a sprinkling of earthy tones and coral. Tiger stripes complemented the camouflage in this great collection.

A Visit to London Designer Outlet

Although my birthday is at the beginning of the month, even I have to admit January is the worst. I had the most incredible birthday weekend and naturally I extend the celebrations across the entire month (lol) but even then, it’s not a pleasant month. Christmas and New Year celebrations are a distant memory, it’s still cold, it’s still dark and payday seems to be both a distant memory and too far away. There’s actually nothing to look forward to. Bleak.

My natural instinct is to either hibernate or indulge in some retail therapy. Given the current obsession with hygge, the first choice might be the more obvious way to go but you just deny the appeal of feeling better and having a new dress to brighten your mood. The only problem is: January = broke. The sales are great but super stressful, I avoid Oxford Street at all costs and only really indulge in some online shopping but nothing beats being able to peruse the rails, feel the fabrics and try everything on before heading home with purchases you’re totally happy with. There’s nothing more heart-breaking than receiving a huge ASOS order and returning the entire box of ill-fitting goodies.

On my quest for some retail therapy, I hopped over to Wembley Park this weekend to check out London Designer Outlet (LDO). I did consider heading to Bicester Village…but that requires committing an entire day to shopping and venturing out to deepest, darkest Oxford whereas I just hopped on the Jubilee line to LDO. The shopping centre is right by Wembley stadium and full of your high street faves, from Kurt Geiger and Sunglass Hut to Jack Wills and Adidas. In fact, there are 50 brands selling their good at up to 70% off with 20 restaurants and bars to refuel in between all that retail therapy. I might have indulged in a little retail therapy with my boyfriend, which happily didn’t dent either of our wallets. My bank manager must be breathing a sigh of relief!

Although we spent a long time checking out pretty much every store, we spent the most time in Jack Wills stocking up on some great basics. There was an arctic chill in the air so we naturally got a couple of jumpers each, I found an incredible ice white faux fur hat, some cosy loungewear and a green plaid shirt that is definitely going to cause a few arguments - I maintain that it looks better on me worn oversized but my boyfriend is sticking with his “But it’s a men’s shirt…” stance. You’re extremely likely to see me wearing it in a couple of months with studded boots, bedhead and a bold red lip.

Thankfully, LDO also has a cinema and tons of restaurants and bars – exactly what you need after that exhausting retail therapy, I mean cardio. We went to Sugar Dumplin for dinner, seduced by the cosy cabanas and authentic menu. My boyfriend opted for the buttermilk fried jerk chicken with rice n peas, which smelt incredible, while I went for the delicious butternut squash and chickpea creole curry which was so yum! It was so good to taste some spicy Caribbean flavours, washed down with a little Wray & Nephew – the perfect antidote to a dreary January.

My Ultimate Guide to Paris

If you follow me in Instagram or Twitter, you’ll know that I snuck across the channel to Paris for a long weekend. It’s a cliché but I absolutely adore Paris, it’s one of my favourite European cities and a place I fondly think of as a second home. I’m fortunate to have visited Paris about a dozen times, so each trip tends to be a mixture of revisiting old haunts while discovering new favourites and just a touch of sightseeing in between. I always get asked about my favourite spots in Paris so it’s about time I stopped keeping them to myself and shared them with you! I’d love to hear your favourites too so share your best in the comments section.

Shopping

As one of the big four fashion capitals, many flock to Paris to shop til they drop. The Champs Elysees is lined with beautiful designer boutiques, both home-grown French brands and international superbrands alike. But…there’s not much in Paris that I can’t find back in Bond Street or Selfridges. Plus, it’s not much cheaper now due to the Brexit effect. Instead, I invest my money in the following stores and bring back things I can’t find at home.

Sephora
This beauty mecca needs no introduction. Home to over 300 brands as well as its own line, Sephora is practically on every corner and no trip to Paris is complete without a mini-spree. I really like their own-label skincare and I picked up yuzu face wipes, a rose eye mask and an intriguing foam mask on my last visit.

French PharmaciesFrench pharmacies are the stuff of legends and thankfully there are about 3 on each street. Forget dour British pharmacists who grumpily hand over your antibiotics prescription, their French counterparts are part skincare expert and part scientist. If you can speak French, tell them what skincare issues you’re facing and they’ll provide the perfect remedy from brands like Bioderma, Vichy, Klorane et al. I *always* stock up on Bioderma miceller water and Klorane dry shampoo, they’re both the best in the business and cult items.

Vintage shopping This is where Paris really excels. I started and stopped vintage shopping in London within a week, everything was just crammed together and I couldn’t find anything decent for a reasonable price. This is not the case in Paris, vintage stores tend to be merchandised much better and most of the pieces I’ve picked up have been between €5-10 and in pristine condition. Marais has at least a dozen vintage stores but there are 3 that I absolutely adore. I make a beeline for Vintage Desir/Coiffeur (32 rue de rosiers) first as it’s my favourite and I have never left it emptyhanded. I also like Come On Eileen/Les Beautiful Vintage (40 rue de rivoli). It’s like a treasure trove and you’re likely to find vintage Gucci and Issey Miyake alongside Levis cut offs. My last ‘must visit’ is Free ‘p’ Star (20 rue de rivoli) which is a mishmash of curated vintage

Eating and drinking

The Paris restaurant scene is very similar to London, booming. You can pretty much find whatever cuisine tickles your fancy at any budget and there are always new places to check out. I have a few tried-and-tested favourites below but also a list of places I want to check out next time including Kong, Septime and Artisan.

Hotel Costes
Located a hop, skip and a jump away from Jardin de Tuileries, Hotel Costes in a Paris institution. I’m yet to eat here but I can vouch for the opulent bar, which is a firm favourite of the fash pack. Decadent chandeliers glitter in the candle light while the great and the good of Paris cosy up on red velvet sofas. Drinks are expensive, even by London standards, but they do a great Bloody Mary and it’s the best spot for people watching.

Hotel Amour
Full disclosure, Hotel Amour is set in a former brothel and is on the fringe of Montmatre’s red light district so you’ll find a few  *ahem* cheeky details in the hotel and reception. Part-owned by one half of the duo behind Hotel Costes, this is another must-visit spot in Paris. I love this quirky hotel and their beautiful plant-filled,glass-roofed courtyard is a cosy spot for brunch or dinner. I popped over to a brunch of boiled eggs and soldiers washed down with Sencha tea over the weekend but next time I’ll be coming for dinner.

Buvette
Buvette is a short stroll from Hotel Amour in Paris’ gritty but trendy South Pigalle, or SoPi, area. The Paris offshoot of a New York favourite, this neighbourhood hangout brings some Greenwich Village cool to Paris with its cosy atmosphere and exposed brickwork. The menu is full of comfort food served in small plate form, I popped in for a brunch of scrambled eggs with chevre but I wish I’d had room for the avo toast and Nutella waffles too!

Candelaria
This little spot is my current favourite. It’s a tiny taqueria  with an open kitchen, the décor is a little pared back but the food is to die for. I love the cactus and mushroom tacos and veggie tostadas and there are also plenty of meat options. The highlight is the hidden bar, just push past an unmarked door and you go from a bare little taqueria to a clandestine drinking den lit by candles. The cocktails are as good as the food, but be sure to arrive early as Candelaria doesn’t take reservations.

Rose Bakery
Paris’ Rose Bakery is so iconic there’s even an import in London’s Dover Street Market. Nonetheless, I still have to visit one while in Paris. Rose Bakery is known for its ingredients, which are mainly organic and from small producers. I used to go to the one in Marais until it inexplicably closed so I was super happy to discover there was one in SoPi. I normally hit up Rose Bakery for a hearty breakfast, usually eggs followed by pancakes, but this time I just stopped in for a delicious matcha cake and an Earl Grey.

Angelina
Angelina is one of the most famous tea houses in Paris and its beautiful interior hark back 1903. There are a couple in the city now but the original is across the street from the Jardin des Tuilleries. The setting is grand and decadent; high ceilings, huge paintings and a soothing colour scheme. Le chocolat chaud a l’ancienne l’Africain is the reason for the queues out of the front door, a hot chocolate so thick and creamy it’s practically a dessert. It’s served in a jug accompanied by freshly whipped cream. Pro tip: Avoid the queues and grab a chocolat chaud to go and head across the street to the beautiful gardens.

Little Red Door
Warning: Do not open the little red door. It’s purely for decorative purposes! Instead, head through the door to the left when you’re ushered in by the lovely bouncer. Inside, you’ll find a softly lit, bohemian drinking den with cosy couches and tons of candles. The menu is unique; you pick a drink based on a picture an artist created when they tasted it. I picked one with absinthe but it was as delicious as my companion’s rum-based cocktail. The bar tenders and staff are super helpful and attentive in this quirky little bar. Make the most of it now, before you have to queue to get a table.

Glass
Glass is located in the heart of SoPi. A dimly lit dive bar, this place wouldn’t be out of place in New York. By the same group behind Candelaria, the bar serves hotdogs and homemade pickles along with speciality beers, cocktails on tap and boilermakers. Parisian it aint, but it’s good fun, open til the wee hours and has a little bit of a rebellious spirit.

L’As du Fallafel
This is one of my guilty pleasure eateries and handily located next door to Vintage Desir/Coiffeur. Don’t worry too much about hunting down the door number, just head down rue des rosiers and look for the queue, there’s always a queue. The falafel here is legendary – fresh, light and crisp. The falafel special is a mere €8 and consists of the famous falafel along with salad, cabbage, roasted aubergine, lashings of tahini and a dollop of chilli sauce. If the queue looks unbearable, head to the handy take out window for a shorter wait.

Accommodation

If you’re expecting some dope hotel recommendations, I’m sorry to disappoint. There are some beautiful hotels in town like Le Bristol, but I tend to stay in a cute little Air Bnb apartment. It just feels much more homely that way and Paris has heaps of stunning apartments filled with gorgeous antique furniture and bathed in Paris’s golden sunlight.

C’est tout, that’s a concise little list of my favourite spots in Paris. Let me know your faves, I’ll be heading back to Paris again next month.

Top Five: Payday Treats

Is everyone else completely overjoyed that it’s finally payday?! January payday always feels like discovering the end of a rainbow while angels are singing softly in the background. Pretty much everyone I’ve spoken to is counting down the seconds til they can indulge in a payday treat to pat themselves on the back for making it through the longest month relatively unscathed. One of my friends is eyeing up a gorgeous pair of iridescent Stan Smiths while another has already treated herself to an LVL lash treatment to perk up her lashes.

I’m so overwhelmed that I haven’t decided what to splurge on just yet. I was thinking about booking a little pampering treat like a facial or a massage, but I feel like a cheeky little designer purchase might be in order. As nice as it is to switch off and relax, sometimes all you want is something new and shiny, plus my bathroom cupboard is full of skincare treats and masks so every day tends to be a skin pamper day. Here are the indulgent pieces I have my eye on at the moment:

  1. Aquazzura Wild Thing sandals - £490
I’ve had my eye on these gorgeous sandals since SS16. Inspired by the White Nights festival in St Petersburg, they have a hint of Russian influence. I love the red colour coupled with fun fringing.
  2. Gucci Dionysus shoulder bag - £1,530
I’m literally looking for any reason to add a Dionysus to my collection, so someone help a girl out? I’m obsessed with this version, which adds a subtle floral pattern to the classic GG motif.
  3. Louis Vuitton LV & Me necklace - £305
I’ve also had my eye on an LV & Me necklace for what feels like eons. I have a classic ‘Carrie’ nameplate necklace but an initial feels much cooler, especially when it is reminiscent of iconic Vuitton trunks. Stamped with a discreet LV, it feels super luxe.
  4. Rolex Datejust champagne dial 18k yellow gold ladies watch - £2,695
Ok, ok, I know. A Rolex isn’t just a payday purchase, unless you happen to be a banker just after bonus time. However, I’ve just discovered a site called Xupes which specialises in second hand watches and fell in love with this pre owned rolex…which was much more affordable than I expectedit to be.
  5. Agent Provocateur Gloria kimono - £595
If ever I want a really indulgent treat, I head to Agent Provocateur. There’s just something about beautiful silk or lace lingerie or nightwear to make a woman feel special. This kimono is classic but super beautiful which makes it the perfect treat.

SAG Awards Best Dressed 2017

The final red carpet of January! Compared to the Golden Globes, I found this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet looks a little dull, a few actresses such as Amy Adams and Brie Larson played it far too safe for my liking. There were a few stand out red carpet moments, here are my favourite five looks:

Taraji P Henson in Reem Acra
Taranji absolutely slayed on the red carpet last night! Her Reem Acra dress was perfection made up of 1 part sweet and saccharine and 1 part sultry and sexy. Acra really knocked it out of the park with this dress. I love the colour, the fit and the jewels. The one detail I'm not convinced about are the little black bows, but I love this look so much I'm willing to overlook them.

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen
I wasn't a huge fan of Emma Stone's look at the Golden Globes, hence her unusual absence from my best dressed round up, but I'm glad to see she's back to form of the SAG Awards in McQueen. There's something about this pretty dress adorned with flowers giving way to reveal a pretty lace bodice which reminds me of Lee McQueen's work, albeit softer and more romantic. Accessorised to perfection with a sleek, soft wave.

Natalie Portman in Dior
Best dressed baby bump on the red carpet, Natalie dazzles in Dior. A simple voluminous gown with puffed sleeves is all that's needed to accentuate Natalie's glow. A dramatic eye and hair swept off her face finish the simple look.

Kerry Washington in Roberto Cavalli
Kerry is a statuesque beauty in this stunning Cavalli number. A surprisingly simple look from the master of maximalism, the gown features a sleek silhouette with sheer detailing as well as two of the runway's favourite trends - off the shoulder and fluted sleeves. This is one of Kerry's best red carpet looks.

Nicole Kidman in Gucci
I feel like Nicole Kidman often plays it safe on the red carpet so it's nice to see her take a risk in this green, glittering Gucci gown. The colour is perfect on her alabaster skin and I love the dramatic feather detail - very daring for Kidman. I'm glad she kept the hair and make up simple to complement this stunning dress.

Today I'm going to hop, skip and fly over to Stockholm for a few days. As much as I love London, sometimes it's very necessary to escape it for a while. This is my first ever trip to Stockholm (I know...) but I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time there this year, it's set to become my second home. If you have any recommendations, leave me a comment else keep up with my adventures on Instagram

5 Essential Ingredients for a Mindful Morning Routine

$

0

I have to admit, I’m not a morning person. At all. My most productive hours are always in the evening through til the wee hours. As a result, my bedtime tends to be around 1am, which means I often wake up exhausted and end up snoozing my 6.30am alarm. I wake up begrudgingly and I shuffle through a quick ‘getting ready’ routine with the aim of getting as much extra sleep as I can before getting out of my flat as fast as possible.

Last year, I decided to rethink this approach. In January, I went to a really great yoga and Ayurveda retreat in the Catalan Pyrenees and learnt the significance of a mindful morning routine. While yoga is pretty well known, Ayurveda may be a bit more unfamiliar. It’s an ancient Indian holistic healing system which is over 3,000 years old. It's based on the simple belief that wellness depends on a delicate balance between mind, body and spirit.

Ayurveda highlights the importance of a morning ritual that aligns the body with nature’s rhythm to balance your body and mind. During the retreat, we woke up at sunrise to do pranayama breathing exercises and meditation before an hour long yoga class. Afterwards, I felt so energised. Despite the super early start, I was physically and mentally prepared for the day.

I tried to take this approach back to London with me but it’s so impractical to get to bed early enough to rise with the sun and squeeze in a full Ayurvedic routine in before getting ready for work. . My hours at work are ridiculous, then there’s dinner or drinks with friends, blog events, launches or parties…London life is non-stop.

While I can’t feasibly wake up at 5am like I did at the retreat, I did take away the importance of taking time to time to set yourself up positively for the day. This is the most effective time of the day to practise mindfulness which will really impact your life, a positive outlook can change your whole day.

I’ve made my own super quick and easy routine, with a touch of mindful practices as well as some Ayurvedic principles to make sure I get my day off to a great start. By following Ayurvedic principles, I make sure that my body and mind are balanced before I really start my day.

Here are my 5 essential ingredients for a mindful morning routine to help set you up for a great day:

Meditating/inspiration/reading
It’s so hard to motivate myself to leave the warm, cosy sanctuary of my bed so I start my day with a little positivity while I’m snuggled up. Depending on my mood and what I need for the day, meditate, watch an inspiring talk like a TED talk or read.

If I’m especially stressed or anxious, I love doing some meditation to help me centre before starting my day. It’s one of the most powerful Ayurvedic tools for balancing body and mind. There are many forms of meditation, at the retreat I learnt mantra meditation which I found very powerful but I prefer guided meditation in the morning as it’s a bit gentler to listen to someone lead a 15 minute session.

Sometimes I just need a little kickstart for the day so I’ll listen to a TED Talk to inspire me. I really loved the fabulous Shonda Rhimes’ talk ‘My Year of Saying Yes’ but there are tons of incredible talks. If I just need to ease into my day, I’ll read. I’m currently reading The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield as well as poetry by Nayyirah Waheed, Rupi Kaur and Warsaw Shire.

Sun salutations
Now that my mind is awake, it’s time for my body to follow suit. Along with meditation, yoga is a cornerstone of Ayurveda. I became a yogi long before I started studying Ayurveda and love nothing more than stretching out my body to prepare myself from the day. Ashtanga is my favourite yoga style and as much as I’d love to spend an hour and a half doing the Primary Series each morning, I settle for doing a quick 30-40 routine of sun salutations to stretch and get my blood pumping. It’s a full body workout and the Ashtanga version is physically demanding, the whole point is to warm up the body and sweat.

Oil Pulling and Body Brushing
After working up a sweat, it’s time to shower. Before I jump in the shower, I oil pull and dry body brush. Oil pulling and body brushing are both key in Ayurveda, the former helps to detox your system by pulling out toxins while the latter stimulates the skin and lymphatic system to improve blood circulation and help to release toxins.

I oil pull using coconut oil but you can also use sesame oil or olive oil. I take a teaspoon of oil and as coconut oil is solid at room temperature, I chomp on it till it liquifies then swish it around my mouth for about 10-15 minutes. Toxins are then absorbed by the oil as the volume of liquid increases. It’s important not to swallow any of the oil as this causes the toxins to get reabsorbed by the body. I then sit the now cloudy oil mixture in the bin - coconut oil solidifies and can block pipes so this is the best way to get rid of it.

Dry body brushing can be done with silk gloves, a sponge or a dry brush, I prefer the latter. The massage starts at your feet, using long, sweeping strokes on limbs and circular strokes on your torso. After I’ve finished body brushing, I have a quick shower and moisturise using a beautiful body lotion my housemate bought me from Diptique.

Hot Water and Lemon
The benefits of drinking hot water and lemon are well documented and actually rooted in Ayurveda. Drinking warm water stimulates the digestive system and muscles while lemons help to detox the digestive tract and they are also high in vitamins and minerals. This is one of the quickest parts of my routine and it literally takes 5 minutes. If I’m really pushed for time, I’ll wrap up a slice of lemon and have my morning detox drink when I get into the office.

Tablets
As a vegetarian, I’m super conscious that I’m eating the right food and getting the correct nutrients. Typically, vegetarians tend to be quite low in iron which is why I have  apple, oat and spinach smoothies every morning! As much as I can, I try to eat freshly cooked, nutritious food but I’m super conscious of making sure my body is nourished so I take tablets, particularly through winter, to make sure I’m not missing anything. At the moment I’m taking Seven Seas Perfect7 Woman, which are specially formulated for women. They contain the usual vitamins and minerals plus Omega-3 as well as zinc for healthy skin and nails, biotin for healthy hair, magnesium for energy, vitamin B2 for normal vision and vitamin B6 to help regulate hormones. While I haven’t experienced any Rapunzel-like hair growth, I do have a bit of a glow, stronger nails and a bit more of a spring in my step since I started taking them.

That’s my little mindful, Ayurveda-inspired routine to start my day with a balanced body and mind.

Best Dressed at the 2017 amfAR Gala

The iconic amfAR Gala officially kicks of the fashion festivities of New York Fashion Week. It’s one of the most glittering moments of red carpet season, with the great and the good of the fashion world going all out. This year, it was almost a clean sweep for Versace who dressed the vast majority of attendees - it’s much quicker to put together a list of attendees not wearing Versace than those dressed by Donnatella! Here are my top five looks from the fabulous amfAR Gala:

Naomi Campbell in Atelier Versace
Queen Naomi was a tangerine dream in this exquisite beaded gown. The beading and sheer panels added much needed texture to the simple cut and the thigh high split added sassy drama. One of my favourite looks of the night.

Hilary Rhoda in Brandon Maxwell
Maxwell is one of my favourite American designers so I’m always thrilled to see his looks on the red carpet. Hilary wore the hell out of this unique gown with a backless velvet bodice and simple black skirt with centre split. I’m really obsessed with this look.

Madison Beer in Ashi Studio
This is why i love amfAR, you don’t get glorious fashion moments like this very often on awards show red carpets. This demure yet dramatic gown made a real sartorial statement. I love the colour, the subtle embroidery. Also a huge fan of the simple undo and gentle smoky eye. Perfection.

Zoe Kravitz in Versace
I love that Zoe always remains true to her aesthetic on and off the red carpet - she will always go for an edgy statement rather than a frothy tulle number. This Versace look is  stunningly minimal look. I just wish it wasn't quite so sheer.

Alessandra Ambrosio in Versace

Also in a white Versace gown, Alessandra looked every inch a Victoria’s Secret Angel on the amfAR red carpet. A timeless asymmetric design with clean lines, it was perfectly accessorised with minimal accessories.

Best Dressed at the Grammys and BAFAs 2017

Sunday night was a real treat, with both the Grammys and the BAFTAs taking place. While the great, good and celebrated in the music, TV and film industries took to their respective red carpets, the fashion industry was ready to digest each look. Metallic formed a key trend on both red carpets with edgy looks winning over pretty, romantic looks. I’ve picked my top five looks from the Grammys and could only manage four from a largly underwhelming BAFTAs red carpet.

Best Dressed at the Grammys

Rihanna in Armani Prive
Without a doubt, Rihanna was the best dressed at the Grammys. The pretty, black layered, voluminous skirt is expertly balanced with with the tiny, orange, barely-there crop top. I was really surprised that this edgy look was Armani Prive, who normally send metallic and futuristic looks down the runway. Does this mark a new direction for Armani Prive?

Heidi Klum in Philip Plein
Perhaps better known for their theatrical shows and outlandish designs, this is a surprisingly surprisingly restrained look. This shimmering sheath skims over Heidi’s curves perfectly, creating a look that’s understated and cool yet sexy and red carpet appropriate. I’m not wild about the heels though, a barely there sandal would have been a better option.

Laverne Cox in Bryan Hearns
This was the fabulous Laverne’s first outing at the Grammys and she knocked it out of the park. This gorgeous Bryan Hearns leather dress is held together by chain accents, showing off her beautiful curves. I’m glad Laverne went for a smoky eye and sleek ponytail to complement her edgy look.

Jennifer Lopez in Ralph & Russo
This is one of the most talked-about looks from the Grammys red carpet and deservedly so, even though J.Lo’s youthful looks almost distract from the beautiful Ralph & Russo gown she’s wearing. Jennifer looks like a goddess in this soft lilac gown, but I wish she had gone for a sleek updo as the hair competes with the tulle neck adornment.

Katy Perry in Tom Ford
I have to admit, I’m very conflicted about this look. I love it at certain angles but straight on, it looks like two separate pieces. But art is supposed to make you feel and Tom Ford is one of the greatest artists, for this reason it makes my best dressed list. Katy’s newly bleached lob looks stunning with this unexpected sequinned top and feather skirt combination.

Best Dressed the BAFTAs

Thandie Newton is Osman
I’m pleased as punch to see Osman on the red carpet! One of my favourite British designers, he does red carpet-worthy looks so well but seeing them make an outing is a rare treat. Thandie is the most glamorous vamp in this strapless gown paired with a dark berry lip. One of my favourite looks from a largely underwhelming BAFTA red carpet.

Emma Stone in Chanel
The cool kids have been making a case for dresses over trousers for a while, none more than Emma Stone. This super chic Chanel look actually reminds me of an Indian outfit I wore to a wedding a few years ago. The pretty embroidery balances the edgy cut and I love the plunging neckline.

Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton
Sparkles were the overwhelming trend at the Grammys and BAFTAs and of course, Vuitton had one of the best looks. It was high octane glam all the way with a plunging neckline and thigh high split in one of Sophie’s best looks on the red carpet.

Emily Blunt in Alexander McQueen

The BAFTAs see Emily return to form as one to watch on the red carpet, her last couple of appearances have been a little underwhelming. The bodice of the drop-waisted gown is pure McQueen and I love the sheer panels which keep the drama of this gown sexy.
